Abstract

Abstract: As an addition to the well-known distinction between learning about and learning from religion, this article introduces «learning how» one gets and can get knowledge about religion as a third alternative. In the first part of the article, I present and define «learning how» and argue why «learning how» should be a primary aim in religion education. This aim includes knowledge about methodology and epistemology in relation to the study of religion, but also knowledge about people’s understanding and attitudes towards religion and religions. In the second part of the article, I position and justify «learning how» in relation to disciplinary literacy and explore how this aim sheds new light on discussions concerning the disciplinary basis for religion education and what content knowledge ought to be prioritized.
