Abstract

This study covers the dynamic relationship between doctoral students and supervisors within different aspects. A healthy relationship between the supervisor and the doctoral student is essential to achieve effective learning outcomes. To get a full picture of supervision, its challenges and how it can be done effectively, this report examines doctorial supervision both through literature, studies conducted at Lund University, and an interview with Michael Cimbritz who is a “pedagogisk utvecklare” at LTH. As a conclusion this report highlights that supervision is complex and highly dependent on the student. Finding a balance between guidance and independence is essential to foster the development of the student and ensure a successful supervisory relationship. Good communication and clear expectations are the key elements. With the help of this study, an overview of the supervision is provided.
