Abstract

The increased military threat against Scandinavia as well Finland’s and Sweden’s entry into NATO has led to a need to recruit as well as to retain military personnel. The aim of this descriptive study, based on a questionnaire replied by 3306 Nordic military employees, was to compare self-reported working conditions and work-related wellbeing in the Nordic armed forces. The results showed that these aspects were reported to relatively equal levels in the Nordic armed forces. A conclusion is that reasonable work demands, a positive organizational climate and supportive leadership are of central importance for retention and recruitment of military personnel.
