Abstract

Staffing difficulties in elderly care is a problem known for years. This article examines the issue from a partially new perspective: By seeing competence as something that can be deepened in the employees and thus in the work groups, the opportunities can increase for employees to stay in the business and also to better introduce and retain new employees, even those with short experience in care work or long unemployment. A model of collective competence as an integration of in-depth skills and group socialization is used to understand how organizational forms can contribute to making care work accessible and sustainable.
