Abstract

The Swedish building industry is undergoing a structural transformation as companies externalise large parts of production to both Swedish and foreign firms. Through ethnographic observations and interviews from project sites, this article analyses the work organisation of two companies and their use of subcontractors. With the point of departure in organisational sociology, the article demonstrate how the use of subcontractors and posted workers results in new forms of work organisation and informal recruitment strategies such as masked staffing. More specifically, the analysis shows how masked staffing is conceptualised both as emergent and deliberately emergent strategies.
