This study investigates the impact of childhood general mental ability on adult job satisfaction using a longitudinal sample of almost 1 000 women and men followed from age 10 to age 48. Differences and were examined with respect to both general mental ability and job satisfaction between different occupational levels and occupational areas. Results show that general mental ability and job satisfaction vary between different occupational levels and areas. Interaction effects were shown between occupational level and gender. The results indicated a self selection into adult working life, which, in turn, has implications for longterm adjustment.
