Abstract

The concept of division of labour has, in recent decades, been absent in the contemporary working life debate. This article wishes to renew and develop this discussion by analysing new labour market models aiming to increase the division of labour within public welfare organizations. Two municipalities’ attempts to increase the division of labour by employing a new job category, service assistants, in schools, preschools and elderly care, are studied. The results show that introducing a new division of labour in municipal organisations seems difficult. Tasks are often highly intertwined and thus problematic to separate and relocate to service assistants.
