Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The text has single line spacing, a font size of 12 points, and italics are used instead of underlining (except for URLs). All illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text and not at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

For review, only complete manuscripts are accepted.

As an author, you should adhere to the following aspects that form the basis for the review of your manuscript:

  • Clarity in problem formulation
  • Clear purpose that is addressed
  • Clear presentation of method/process
  • Relevant literature and research are covered
  • Clear connection between research question, theory, data, and conclusions
  • Clear line of argument
  • Results and conclusions are discussed
  • Language and style

Authors may be asked to submit their manuscripts for language review if the text has such deficiencies that this is required. This service is not provided by Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv. Manuscripts must not have been previously published or available on the internet in Swedish. Nor may the manuscript be simultaneously submitted to another journal. The manuscript should be 5,000 – 8,000 words (maximum) including abstract and reference list. The manuscript should be paginated. Author names should not appear on the manuscript pages.

We allow our published articles to be translated into English for publication in international journals. We also allow, from our side, already published articles in English to be translated into Swedish and submitted for review with us. However, this requires approval from the journal or publisher where the text was previously published.

We welcome debate articles where the aim is to create debate as well as comments on published articles. In debate articles, we emphasize the importance of clarified positions in relation to others and that the text is formulated in such a way that the debate can continue. A debate article is a channel to put forward an opinion and can therefore be provocative. Scope: maximum 2,500 words including introduction and references. A short, informative, and well-structured text is recommended. No peer review is done for debate articles; instead, the editors review the text.

An essay may be 5,000 – 8,000 words (maximum) including abstract and reference list. The manuscript should be paginated. Author names should not appear on the manuscript pages. An essay is a genre that moves between several different text types; it is more serious than a column and more personal than a scientific text. An essay is a formal genre, and the text should use factual sources and have a question or thought that runs as a common thread through the text but does not need to come to clear answers or solutions. The essay is reviewed by an independent reviewer.

A review should not exceed 2,000 words including any reference list. There is also the possibility to write a shorter notice of a book, up to 200 words, which should be formulated as a tip to the readers with a short motivation.

Since manuscripts should be anonymous to the reviewers, the author presentation (only name, title, workplace, and your email address, example: XY, PhD, Work Science, Karlstad University, xy@kau.se) of up to 20 words should be written in the specified box “Comments to the editor” when you submit your contribution. The same applies to any research funders. If the manuscript is part of an upcoming special issue, this should also be indicated here.

We encourage you to relate to already published articles or debate articles in Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv to connect to previous and/or ongoing discussions.

AI tools may only be used to improve the readability and language of an article, not to contribute to the analysis or interpretation of data or draw scientific conclusions. Any use of AI and AI-supported technology should also be indicated in the article.

Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv applies established ethical guidelines for researchers.

References

The journal uses APA 7, see link: https://libguides.kau.se/apa7.

Check the references in the article text against the reference list and vice versa after the final revision of the text.

Note! DOI numbers are written in the same way as other links and can be specified as a link or as plain text: https://doi.org/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

General Writing Rules

  • The title of the article should contain a maximum of 80 characters, including spaces.

  • Write an abstract of no more than 100 words in Swedish under the manuscript title.

  • Write an abstract of no more than 100 words in English at the end of the manuscript after the references.

  • Specify 3–5 keywords in Swedish and English in alphabetical order after the abstract.

  • The manuscript text should start immediately after the keywords without any subheading.

  • Do not start the text with a quote.

  • Subheadings should be short, not numbered, and with a maximum of three heading levels, including the article title. Preferably use Word’s standard template with Normal (for body text), Heading 1 (for the article title), Heading 2, and Heading 3.

  • Footnotes should only be used in exceptional cases.

  • Do not use the % sign in running text; instead, write out the word percent.

  • Write out all abbreviations (for example, compare, and so on).

  • Short quotes are written with quotation marks in running text, quotes longer than 40 words are written as block quotes.

  • Translate foreign quotes into Swedish.

Tables and Figures

  • If tables and figures are used, a reference must always be provided in the text in italics: “As shown in Table 3”.
  • Images, diagrams, etc., in color must be able to be reproduced with good contrast in black and white print.
  • Texts in figures and diagrams must be large enough to be readable when reduced to the journal’s format.
  • All tables and figures should have a title indicating the content of the table/figure (tables title above; figures, diagrams, and images title below). Insert figures, tables, etc., in the text where they should be. Also, send separate JPEG files for images.
  • Avoid lines/boxes in tables; use blank lines for clarity instead.
