The study contributes to knowledge about mentoring programs in elderly care: its prevalence, forms and significance for employees' perception of basic needs at work, job satisfaction, commitment. The results showed that mentoring programs occurred in less developed forms and involved about one in five employees, especially those working full-time. There was no difference between home-based care and residential care. Those who participated in mentoring programs rated higher levels of job satisfaction and commitment, as well as opportunities for learning and providing good care. However, working conditions were generally poor, so the basic needs of autonomy and safety and connectedness were not affected by participation in mentoring programs.
