Abstract

The global COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst for the development of online teaching strategies and digital tools. The past year students and teachers have been forced to adapt to online teaching and learning. This report focused on identifying some challenges and benefits with distance learning in the course activities lectures, exercise sessions, laboratory assignments, group work, and exams, respectively. Potential challenges and benefits were addressed from the perspective of how student motivation and the learning process may be affected in online teaching. It was concluded that there are alternative changes to be made in order to adapt the course structure to be given in an online setting. The pandemic made way for innovation and successful course structures and activities have been designed to enable transition to online learning. However, not every aspect of a course can be transferred to a digital environment. The major drawback that affects student learning and motivation in online teaching is the limitation of social interaction that is important in the pedagogical process.
