Abstract

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered instructional teaching method based on letting students, within the scope of a project, identify problems and develop solutions. To identify differences in PBL usage, implementations, and outcomes, a questionnaire among the authors was created. Together with published literature, this provides a foundation for highlighting today's status in higher education, with both challenges, and opportunities. PBL has been adopted in a wide range of countries on different continents, usually more used in the master’s level than in the bachelor’s level. Experiences varied in the level of support, autonomy, and feedback between the bachelor’s and master’s levels. Similarities were found in what skills PBL developed, e.g., teamwork and time management. This investigation highlights some challenges with PBL today and future opportunities.
