Abstract

This research investigates the impact of mental translation on communicative language teaching and learning in Romanian schools. By examining the perspectives of teachers and students, the study explores how mental translation can enhance language processing, comprehension, and speaking abilities. Through qualitative and quantitative methods, including interviews and questionnaires with teachers and students of English, the research identifies key strategies and challenges associated with mental translation. The findings highlight the potential benefits of incorporating mental translation in language instruction to foster communicative competence and improve language acquisition. Recommendations are provided to optimize teaching methods and encourage innovative practices in foreign language education, ultimately aiming to enhance students' language learning experiences and outcomes.

Daniel Dejica, PhD, habil., Professor in the Department of Communication and Foreign Languages and Dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Politehnica University Timișoara. PhD supervisor, affiliated to the Doctoral School of Humanities, West University of Timișoara. Director of the Center for Advanced Translation Studies (PoliCAT) within Politehnica University Timișoara. His didactic and research interests include translation, discourse analysis, intercultural and interlinguistic communication. He was part of the Doctoral Studies Committee of the European Society for Translation Studies (2009-2018). He coordinates the Translation Studies book series within the Politehnica Publishing House, the Professional Communication and Translation Studies international conference, and is part of the editorial or scientific boards of numerous scientific journals. Together with Muguraș Constantinescu and Titela Vîlceanu, he coordinates A History of Translations in Romanian, a series of volumes published by the Publishing House of the Romanian Academy. Adriana Toma has received her PhD from the Doctoral School of Humanities, West University of Timisoara. She teaches English at “Stefan Hell” High School in Arad. Her main research areas are linguistics and Teaching English as a Foreign Language. She is the author/co-author of different articles and studies such as: The Teaching System in the European Union, Seria de studii de traductologie si integritate europeană, The European Union through the eyes of the Romanian Youth, 2021, Teorii și bune practici în educația pozitivă în contextul incluziunii sociale, 2023, Mental Translation and Communicative School Activities, 2023.
