Abstract

Bengt Hägglund´s latest book “Kunskapsteori och metafysik i teologin” ("Epistemology and metaphysics in theology") is largely devoted to a critical discussion of Anders Nygren (1890-1978) and his "Lundensian theology". Nygren, as interpreted by Hägglund, denied that religious statements can be true or false, or intended to say anything about reality. Hägglund, on the other hand, defends a "realistic" epistemology and theology. The author agrees to a large extent with Hägglund. At the same time he tries to introduce some distinctions which he believes can be valuable. Religious and theological "realism" might be true or false depending on whether it is a semantic, a psychological, an epistemological or a metaphysical theory.
