Abstract
In this paper we explore the role of note-taking in lectures in order to understand its influence in the learning process, while putting particular emphasis on the function of handouts. Note-taking serves two main functions, namely external storage and encoding, both of which can also be related to handouts. Based on a thorough literature review and surveys with students and teachers of Lund University, we developed three suggestions for improved teaching and learning: first, to improve the use and design of lecture handouts; second, to see note-taking and handouts as a way to activate students in lectures, which are learning activities in which students often have difficulties staying focused; and third, to educate teachers and students in handout design and note-taking.
