Abstract
In this paper, we explore the question of cooperative efforts in doctoral studies. We investigate
under which circumstances it may be beneficial to work individually or as part of a research
team. This has been supported by studies of the impact of the research environment on re-
search performance from the literature and data from consecutive doctoral studies surveys
conducted at Lund University in 2007 and 2012. We also look at potential risks with team-
work in doctoral studies. We conclude that it is more common for students working actively
as part of a research group to be satisfied with the opportunities afforded to them. They also
find their working experience more enjoyable.
