Results from a survey about the working situation of PhD students in Sweden are presented. The focus is on questions concerning the working hours and vacation days. A brief review of related prior studies is presented and compared with our present findings. In summary, we find that PhD‐students work on average 43.5 hours per week, which is roughly 4 hours more than they are legally and socially obliged to do.
