Abstract

This article on “Music in the Bible” deals with the following items:

1. Secular and sacred music.
2. Music’s different functions.
3. Vocal music and musical instruments.
4. Theological aspects in some biblical texts: Psalms, Lamentations, Song of Songs, Luke’s infancy narrative, Revelation.

Faith in God was a source of happiness and thanksgiving. Music was used in festivals hut also in the tragic circumstances of daily life. Jews and Christians sang psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to God with gratitude in their hearts (see Col. 3:16f.).
