Abstract

The teaching activities of the Department of Structural engineering is aimed to those
students who choose to deepen their understanding how our most common construction
materials such as steel, concrete and wood should be designed to function correctly in in
different buildings and facilities. The courses are traditionally, structured around lectures with
accompanying exercises where various tasks are solved. The exercises deal with a large
amount of mathematics, which describe the strength of various structural elements and the
stresses which they are exposed to. The conclusion from these exercises is for instance, what
size the beam or pillar will have to meet society's requirements according to Swedish
regulations. In some courses, students also conduct practical tests in order to enhance their
understanding of how the performance of various building materials differs and the
difference in practical and calculated strength. To disseminate the results of the calculations
it is often required to have documentation in the form of a blueprint. The blueprint is the
final result from the engineer's work which will serve as a "recipe", which materials will be
used and how they are used. Very often, this is the difficult part, and the time required for
this work is usually much greater than the actual calculation. In fact, there is no course for
students dealing with this important matter, the meeting between the load‐bearing
structure and all other materials that are required.
