AI IN DOCTORAL SUPERVISION – THREAT OR OPPORTUNITY

Abstract

This study examines the knowledge and views of AI tools among supervisors and Ph.D. candidates in
higher education. While AI has been rapidly advancing and changing various fields, including education
and research, there are concerns about potential negative impacts, such as cheating and false
information. Therefore, this study aims to create a knowledge base for further discussions and identify
how AI tools could be used in acceptable ways for research and supervision. The study analyzed the
perceptions of Ph.D. students and supervisors on the potential applications of AI in research, the
impact of AI on the role of researchers and supervisors, and the benefits and limitations of AI in
enhancing research, data collection, and analysis. The results show that both groups envision AI being
applied to a great extent within their research fields, and they recognize the potential benefits of using
AI techniques in research, such as increased efficiency and accuracy in data analysis, data collection,
and decision-making. However, both groups acknowledge the need to evaluate AI-generated results
critically, understand its limitations, and maintain human involvement in research for quality and
understanding. Regarding ethical considerations of using AI, it seems essential for both Ph.D. students
and supervisors to discuss the use of AI, evaluate potential risks before starting any research project,
and be mindful and critical in using AI tools. Overall, the study highlights the importance of preparing
for the transition by learning about AI tools and their functions.
