This article examines Georgii Plekhanov’s political project in texts from the late nineteenth century addressed to the Russian narodniks. Its aim is to offer a more nuanced understanding of his role in introducing the ideas of Marx and Engels to Russia. Rather than viewing him primarily as a link between Western Europe and Russia, his thought comes into sharper focus when he is understood as an independent actor. From this perspective, he navigated between two linguistic contexts: Western Marxism on the one hand and Russian populism (narodism) on the other.
