Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Manuscript Style Template.
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.

Author Guidelines

Politics and Animals invites authors to submit manuscripts that fall within the focus and scope of the journal, as set out in About the Journal.

Politics and Animals is dedicated to theoretical argument as well as empirical research regarding the political dimensions of the human-animal relationship. Submissions should reflect the fact that they will be read by a diverse audience of specialists, both within the discipline of political science and across other fields that place issues surrounding animal use and treatment on their intellectual and political agendas.

Submitted research articles should be between 6000 and 9000 words.

Style Requirements

Authors are asked to ensure that their submissions adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Manuscript Style Template. This style template is based on the  Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). More information on this style can be found at http://www.apastyle.org. For issues not covered in this manual, the Chicago Manual of Style (16th ed.) should be consulted.

  • Authors should take care to offer well-argued and clearly written pieces. Unnecessarily technical or obtuse language should be avoided.
  • Technical terms should be explained and an English translation supplied for all non-English words used.
  • All spelling, punctuation, and word usage should conform to American English. For further information on use of standard American English see Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (11th ed.).
  • Authors should avoid discriminatory language, including derogatory language that denigrates nonhumans or humans by association (word choices like “beasts”, “brutes”, “critters”, “bestial”, referring to an animal as “it”, etc.).
  • Authors of full length articles must provide a concise abstract of no more than 100 words.
  • Full-length article elements should be arranged in the following order: title, author, affiliation, abstract, key words, body text, acknowledgements, references.
