Regional utvikling i nord
En komparativ analyse av politikk og demografi i Nord-Norge og Nord-Sverige
Abstract
Regional Development in the North: A Comparative Analysis of Politics and Demography in Northern Norway and Northern Sweden
This study examines the political and demographic trends in Northern Norway and Northern Sweden, regions often perceived as distinct due to their peripheral status. Despite some differences, significant similarities exist in their political and demographic developments. Both regions have been historically dominated by social democratic parties, although with stronger support in Northern Sweden. Recent elections show a rise in right-wing populist parties, particularly in Northern Norway. Both regions have experienced demographic decline relative to national averages, with growth mainly in urban knowledge centres. This paper employs a time-series analysis of electoral and population data from 1973 to 2023 to explore voter behaviour and its implications for regional policies. The findings suggest that while Northern Norway has seen more active peripheral mobilisation, both regions’ overall demographic trends remain parallel. This highlights the impact of welfare policies and regional stabilisation efforts in maintaining demographic stability despite differing political landscapes.
