What is the role of risk in trust? A discussion on the concept of generalized trust The present article concerns the idea of generalized trust. The question of whether respondents trust other people in general is often posed in social surveys worldwide. Still, the very idea of such trust is problematic. Concerns about lack of validity and relevance associated with measuring generalized trust have frequently been debated in the literature. But there is less focus on the more basic, theoretical, aspects – such as the role of risk in generalized trust. Definitions of trust usually include risk, risk-taking and risk-assessment as major components. But is it possible to describe generalized trust in these terms? And if not, what then is generalized trust? This article examines these issues.
