We use a case study approach to examine whether new knowledge and technological capabilities can be acquired by a set of informal firm operating in the agricultural subsistence sector in Tanzania as a result of interaction with the College of Engineering and Technology at the University of Dar es Salaam. We find that by becoming members of Gatsby Club, firms have been introduced to important new organisations which assisted in the process of new knowledge acquisition. Technological capabilities have mainly been improved but also acquired; mainly at basic level.
