Abstract

Freedom of speech: Its foundation, boundaries and significance for democracy. This essay examines the boundaries and foundations of freedom of speech as well as its significance for democracy. There are two problems associated with freedom of speech, the first being the lack of discussion over its foundations— i.e. why is it a good thing? The second problem concerns the boundaries of freedom of speech. While this remains the subject of heated debate, primarily within the liberal tradition, the issue is unresolved. The study concludes that it is possible-at least in principle — to identify the boundaries of freedom of speech. It is also possible to identify why freedom of speech is a good thing and what its consequences are for democracy and citizens alike.
