Abstract

The report “Open access in Southern European countries” is edited by Lluís Anglada and Ernest Abadal. It is published by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) with the collaboration of the Consortium of Academic Libraries of Catalonia (CBUC), and the research group “Acceso Abierto a la Ciencia” (http://www.accesoabierto.net)

It presents open access initiatives and developments in France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey. According to the Introduction, these countries have special characteristics. Their languages have long traditions, but are not the usual channels for scientific communication, they do not have a powerful publishing industry, or they spend a small percentage of GDP on research and scientific data acquisition.

As some of these characteristics also can be found in the Nordic countries, the Introduction refers to the Nordbib report “Open access in the Nordic countries: a state of the art report”, showing the describing conditions in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. http://www.nordbib.net/Initiatives---Reports/Reports/OA-in-the-Nordic-countries.aspx

“Open access in Southern European countries” can be downloaded by chapter. http://oaseminar.fecyt.es/Publico/report/index.aspx or in full http://www.accesoabierto.net/sites/accesoabierto.net/files/OASouthEurope.pdf
