The Science and Technology Council of Iceland signed the Berlin Declaration on the 27th of May 2010.

Abstract

The role of the Science and Technology Policy Council is to promote scientific research and research training in the sciences and encourage technological progress in Iceland, for the purpose of strengthening the foundations of the country’s culture and boosting the competitive capacity of its economy.

Operating under the direction of the Prime Minister and consisting of ministers, scientists and business representatives, the Council formulates public policy on scientific research and technological development.

At the signing of the Berlin Declaration the Science and Technology Policy Council released a statement on the following issues:

The Science and Technology Policy Council encourages the guardian of public funds to set conditions for open access on all publicly funded projects.

The funding agencies under the Science and Technology Policy Council are encouraged to require open access to scientific literature. The research and conservation organizations such as the Icelandic universities and Landspitali, National University Hospital are encouraged to require open access to scientific publications, published by its employees.
