Abstract

Foteviken, a Place for Different People Foteviken is a Viking village in Sweden. In the village area you will find newly built houses as they were built during the Viking age. The article also describes the unemployed, people with Viking age interest, the museum chef, a professional Viking. Two important things made the building of the village possible: The help from hundreds of unemployed who have been working there and where people of today will experience adventure. Although the importance of the unemployed there is no information about them. They are a hidden group. Due to changes in Sweden it is today not possible to have that much help from the unemployed. Therefore Foteviken must find other economic resources by for example, operating a restaurant, a Youth Hostel and various EU projects. To be a Viking is a man’s world. Most of the activities demand strength. The Viking dress is very different for men and women, a difference which makes it impossible for women to participate in most of the prestige filled games. Instead they act as onlookers. It is important that Foteviken like other similar villages is bound to the surroundings. Therefore the battle at Foteviken in the year 1134 is the most important link to the past and to the present. It is celebrated every year among Vikings. Foteviken shows an old picture that also is an example of Sweden today with all of today’s regulations and cleanliness.
