Author Guidelines

Lund Archaeological Review is printed annually. Each volume is also published online in Open Access by Lund University.  All manuscripts are peer-reviewed.

Preparation and submission
Contact the editors (lar@ark.lu.se) and send an abstract outlining the intended article. This can be done anytime during the year.

The manuscript should be sent to the editors before the end of May.

Language
The language of the journal is English.

Title page
The manuscript should begin with an abstract of about 150 words.

The name, department, address and e-mail of the author should be stated under the abstract.

In the event of multiple authors, one corresponding author should be chosen.

The text
One printed page in the journal corresponds to ca. 3500 characters, and each article is 10-15 pages long (including illustrations and references).

Use a plain font (e.g. 12-point Times Roman) for text.

Use the automatic page numbering function to number the pages.

Do not use field functions.

A maximum of two heading levels may be used.

Leave no blank lines between paragraphs.

Use tab stops or other commands for indents, not the space bar.

Acknowledgments should be placed in a separate section before the reference list. Do not abbreviate the names of departments, funding organizations etc.

Figures & Tables

All illustrations will be printed in black and white.

Illustrations must be of good quality (1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for grayscale. Use TIFF format whenever possible) and submitted electronically on a separate disc.

All illustrations should be called figures and numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals.

Tables should be numbered consecutively using Roman numerals.

Use “fig.” when referring to illustrations in the text. Tables should be referred to as “table” in the text: “In table II and fig. 3 the distances from the resource...” If reference to a figure or table is made in parentheses, use upper-case letters: “...from the resource to the place of deposition (Fig. 3 and Table II)”.

Captions begin with the term Fig. or Table, followed by the number. Include punctuation after the number, as well as at the end of the caption.

Identify previously published material by giving the original source in the form of a reference citation at the end of the caption. In the case of photos or drawings, please identify who is responsible: “Photo/drawing by C. Photographer.”

Captions should be submitted on a separate page and numbered consecutively.

Tables (including captions and possible references) should be submitted on separate pages and numbered consecutively.

The position of all figures and tables should be indicated in the manuscript.

Citation

Reference citations should be included in the text. The citation should include author’s name and year. When relevant include a page reference: e.g. (Svensson 1985, 75) when referring to one page, (Svensson 1985, 75 f.) when referring to one page and the following page, and (Svensson 1985, 75 ff.) for referring to a particular page and several following pages. Use (Svensson & Persson 1985, 75) if the work includes two authors (Svensson et al. 1985, 75) if the reference includes more than two authors.

If the same note includes more than one publication, these should be noted in chronological order by date of publication, e.g. (Persson 1970, 86 f.; Andersson 1980, 16; Svensson 1985, 30 ff.). If two works are published in the same year, these should be placed alphabetically according to the author’s name. If the same author has published more than one work during the same year, a lower-case letter should be used to differentiate between them. For example (Olsson 1985a, 50; Olsson 1985b, 63).

Footnotes may be used only in special cases. The texts for the footnotes are placed just before the list of references.

14C dates are given with uncalibrated values using BP and calibrated values using BC and AD. Please give a reference to the laboratory number. With calibrated dates, state also the´ uncalibrated value of the sample in the same reference as the laboratory number.

Reference list
The list of references should be labelled “References” and include the surname(s) of the author(s), first name initial(s), year, title of the publication, and name of book series or´ journal where appropriate.

State the names of all authors.

The place of publication but not the publisher should be included for books.

The name of a book series or journal should be written without abbreviations.

The name of the journal should be italicized.

If the reference is an article in a book, the editor’s or main authors’ names should be indicated and the name of the book should be italicized.

The title of an independent book in a series should be italicized.

The number of pages for journal articles or books should not be given.

Use upper-case and lower-case letters in book titles, journal titles, series titles etc., as they are used in the original publication.

Follow the language of the publication regarding e.g. place of publication.

For Internet sources, provide the date of access: [Accessed 30 October 2011].

For more than one publication by the same author, replace subsequent listings with horizontal bar (–) instead of the author’s name.
