Abstract

This article examines the development of research on biblical reception in Sweden, particularly by way of scholarly debates about what counts as ”exegesis”. Offering a contextual background for this special issue, I foreground what biblical scholars in Sweden have accomplished in this area. I then go on to reflect on what can be done further, both when it comes to teaching and research. The article engages with the question as to how results from research on biblical reception can be communicated to religious communities as well as other parts of society at large. Ultimately, I argue for the important role of the scholar’s responsibility when it comes to research and teaching on biblical reception. With an eye to the responsibility that follows from attention to the history of interpretation of the Bible, biblical scholars can communicate and create new knowledge that contributes to society and the common good.
