Innenfor, utenfor eller imellom? Innsirklinger av det hellige

Abstract

This essay attempts to offer a fresh phenomenological approach to the holy. In the classical literature on the topic, sharp dividing lines dominate the accounts, such as between the holy and the profane. This essay argues that such divisions do not reflect the phenomena properly, since the holy cannot be conceived apart from the particular epistemological location it occupies, namely “in between.” The essay elucidates such liminality by drawing three of its representative modes into attention: between the wholly other and the ordinary, between the inner and outer, and, finally, between subjective and objective perception of space.
