Abstract

This artide examines the role of christology in a culture influenced by the natural sciences. Some general remarks about the relation between science and theology are followed by a short discussion on how «scientific» con-temporary culture actually is. A church operating in a secularised society tends to hold a low christological profile. Today, several reasons, however, are speaking in favour of a rekindling in christology. In this respect, the natural sciences are seminal dialogue partners. A survey of different views of nature throughout the history of science is related to varying notions of God, Jesus Christ and the Trinity in theology. Parallels in concepts of nature and theology throw light upon the contextuality of knowledge. Gerd Theißen’s contribution to a christology based on main features of the theory of evolution (mutation, selection, adaptation) is discussed as an example of relating science and theology. It is held that a major benefit of a dialogue between a theological concept and a scientific theory comes from the development of new modes of expression as the key to a multiple enhancement of knowledge.
