Abstract

This article consists of two parts. In the first, a description of the nature of philosophical investigations is given. It is claimed that philosophy is not driven by new questions, but by a striving for a deeper insight into the nature of philosophy. This may be seen in the philosopher’s attempt to gain clarity about phenomena he or she wonders at, a clarity which is not arrived at by means of new information, and to gain clarity about what problems pertain to the different possible ways of understanding the phenomena in question. In the second part, this description of the nature of philosophy is illustrated by means of a discussion of the Danish play-writer Kaj Munk’s play Ordet («The Word»). In the play a character is said to have died and then come to life again through the action of God. In the article, it is discussed how this should be understood and which type of problems, if any, pertain to the way the characters in the play understand what has happened.
