Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has entered most areas of society, including the educational system, and is dynamically changing already known boundaries. As teachers face increasing workloads, AI tools could potentially serve as student-assessment assistants. The scope of this study is to understand the capabilities of these tools and the legal framework under which this can be implemented. Several studies suggest that AI can successfully provide support in various assessment activities. Specifically, it has been demonstrated that when AI assisted assessments were well-defined and rubric aligned, they showed strong consistency with human grading. Nonetheless, important limitations persist, including AI hallucinations. To promote responsible usage, this report outlines legal and ethical considerations for AI assisted assessment systems. The report discussed the benefits of a hybrid model in which both AI and teachers are responsible for the evaluation of the assessments. Finally, practical considerations for teachers are described based on literature, as well as the legal aspects that must guide educational institutions when integrating AI tools into assessment of workflows.
