Abstract

Effective doctoral supervision requires adapting to a student’s evolving competence, yet little is known about how and when supervisors adjust their approach. This project explores that dynamic through a March 2025 pulse survey of PhD students and supervisors. With insights from 50 responses across disciplines and experience levels, the study identifies key moments for shifting supervisory style. The findings, illustrated with real comments, conclude with a practical checklist to support timely, responsive supervision.
