Abstract

Party Cultural Change within the Parliamentary Group of the Swedish Green Party

The purpose of this article is to investigate the tenacity of party culture and whether this is a factor which could offer resistence to processes of cartelization. The case put under study is the Swedish Green Party parliamentary group (PPG) and the research question is whether the group’s organizational culture has altered and, if so, in ways which are in line with the logics of cartelization; i.e. if the organizational culture of the party group has developed towards more of pragmatism, hierarchy and professionalism. The underlying idea is that a new ”anti-party” party such as the Greens could be expected to have being put under pressure for change, thereby being a crucial test. The main conclusion is that there has been a certain change compared to the party’s early years, but that this is more limitied than could be expected. Especially individualism and non-hierarchy still stand out as remarkably strong within the Green PPG.
