Glimpses of the Linguistic Situation in Solomon Islands

Abstract

This paper will give a linguistic overview of Melanesia and of the Pacific as a whole, underlining the multilingualism of Melanesia. The situation in the Melanesian countries has produced creole languages suitable for communication. Some characteristics of Solomon Islands Pijin will be given, as well as some glimpses of one of the indigenous languages, namely Kwaio.
