Developing an academic identity

In this paper I examine the doctoral pursuit as a process of development towards an academic identity for the PhD student. The paper is motivated by three empirical observations of identity struggles through the beginning, middle and end of the doctoral process. By merging literature from pedagogic on PhD supervision and literature from organization studies on narrative identity work in role transitions, I examine in what ways we might understand the identity struggles experienced by the doctoral students and how the supervisor and broader research community may support the PhD student in their narrative identity work towards an academic identity.
